FORM AP-109D: History known of individual.
A small, conical woodwind instrument played with two reeds. Known for its distinctive sound and versatile tone.
First creation documented around the middle 1700s after modification of a previous double-reed instrument, the SHAWM, although further roots go back to Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Additional modification of keys and pads created the instrument we know today. Previously known as a hautbois.
A standard fixture of all kinds of ensembles and musical styles, such as orchestras, marching bands, and concert bands. It is sometimes featured as a solo instrument and was the primary melody-carrying woodwind in early military bands until it was overshadowed by the Clarinet.
They became close with Flute and Clarinet in the 18th century. They are one of the younger woodwinds. Actual age unknown.
